London taxi is steeped in history and myth.
the cap no longer has to have an extra high cealing, once upon a time needed for man's top hat.
but that still has benefits.
the height also gives us good wheelchair access
and obviously today, if you like that high hat is being replaced by the need to make it accessible for the disabled.
so, your wheelchair accessibility is one of our great strength.

LTI's Russell says, there are no plans to change the shape.
and by the way, a wide variety of colors are available.
the taxis come in twelve colors, but you wouldn't see many white ones in London.
In fact, these are for LTI's newest customer.
an order of 200 taxis for Bahrein.

the international market is now key for LTI's growth plan.
it also builds London Taxis in China.
just in time perhaps, as more Mercedes cabs can now be seen on the streets of London.
All the drivers I speak to,, are..
a big percentage of them are really considering buying this vehicle as opposed to the other one.

workers here are hoping, you'll be able to hail one of these where you live some day soon.
Jim Bouldon CNN, Coventry England.

CNN News (4:13-6:00)

you've got used to lower gas prices, but get ready we may see some of those savings slip away
now federal tax commission wants to pump up the national gas tax we pay.
the commission which oversees funding for transportation project is suggesting another dime of gallon for gas
and as much as fifteen cents for diesel.
the reason, Americans are driving less and buying less gasoline.
that's making it tougher to pay for road, bridge and mass transit projects.
they are as much a part of England's history as the royal family, but these days, black cabs are not being held like they used to be.
here now, CNN's Jim Bouldon.

This is Coventry England where the London taxi is built
and this is the man who was brought in to save the venerable black cab
car business has been difficult for the last twelve month
partly because the taxitrade is slightly down in a later market particularly in London.
but mainly because of confidence issue.
people postpone and purchase.
add to that, the latest model from London Taxi International or LTI had to be recalled because of engine fires.
who should compensate drivers for lost hours, is an on-going headache.

London taxis neither have to be black or this traditional shape.
and in fact, LTI now has competition in the form of the silver Mercedes taxi.

it drives like limousine, it feels like you are in a limousine
it's a bigger vehicle to work with in London, as you can appreciate.
Richard Belasco was the first London cabbie to get the modified Mercedes Vito when it was launched in June.
service in,, which is your main costs...
if you need to cut down on when you drive a taxi in London
is anything serviceable and that's where the cost is going to be cut.

venerable

CNN Daily News  (2:13 - 4:13)

An exclusive address for the president elects.
while he waits for the current residence to move out of 600 pensilvenia avenue,
CNN Smith Hay has more.

He won the most exclusive address in the country.
but first, president elect, Barrack Obama will be staying across the street in a hotel that claims to be the most prestigious.
Hay Adam's motto is actually the only thing overlooked here is the White House.
And it's where other presidents have looked for top-notch accomoation.
President Bill Clinton stayed in Hay Adam's which also happen to be conveniently located near one of his favorite restaurant.
The hotel also has a storied past.

It was named for John Hay, the assistant of President Lincoln and later, secretary of state.
And Henry Adams, a claimed author and decendent of President John Adams and John Quincy Adams.
The hotel is thought to be haunted by Henry Adam's wife, Clover.

And it's said that Henry Adam's wife, Clover who committed suicide in 1885 still haunts the hotel grounds today.
specially and I don't know why this is in the month of December.

The Obahma's first choice was the official White House guest quarters, called the Blair house.
but President Bush says it is booked until the fifteenth.

There certainly was a lot of whispers when that came out that it was a little bit rude to tell that president elect that he couldn't move into Blair early.
But, on the other hand, there are legitimate needs for that space for outgoing ministration.
so, for now, the new president will enjoy the spectacular views of the White House from the Hay Adam's.
As he prepares to see things from a different angle, on the inside.

If the Obama stay in one of the sweets at the Hay Adams, the price could range from 2900 dollars to 5000 a night.
And who is staying at the Blair House?
No one is saying for sure, but the house is also booked for receptions and parties by outgoing administration officials and VIPs.
Semanta Hays CNN, Washington.

top-notch
If you describe someone or something as top-notch, you mean that they are of a very high standard or quality.

The pacific north west slam by one storm after another last month is getting hit again.
This one could dump as much as 18 inches of new snow in cascades.
Two main east-west mountain pathes in Washington are still close for fear of avalanches.
Provinces of Oregon are getting more of the rain and that is causing alot of flooding.
Portions of several state high ways have now been close and flood warnings are out.

Jumping into lakes or oceans half naked in freezing temperature.
might not be everybody's idea bringing in the new year.

cuz other just call him crazy.
but one jumper and a man says it makes him warm inside because his event raises money for charity and it is a way of giving back to the community.

and another icy adventure.
each year, a group of guys in Defiance Ohio go water skiing on the freezing Maumes River
yesterday the temperature twenty degrees
the water was so cold, the boat had to run through the water to break out the ice for the skiers.
after about ten minutes and two wipes, the skiers had enough.

From greenbay wisconsin, now
tale of ice fishing and ones that almost got away, eight people stranded on huge chunks of water that were cut lose by a passing barge.

do you feel a little silly now?
I will when I see myself on television.
this is probably the most complex, difficult ice rescues that we have performed in quite some time.
whenever you have multiple groups, spending miles of a shore line, that's when you need additional resources
the ice condition really deteriorated very quickly
well, not all the stranded people were fishing some of them were joy-riding on snow mobiles and others were simply out taking a wallk.
all said that  they were surprised to see that they were surrounded by open water.
